AT A GLANCE
You sign in to Runmate with Apple, Google or Kakao. The server keeps that account and the nickname you choose for rooms. Your runs and routes stay on your phone and are never sent to the server.
WHAT THE SERVER HANDLES, AND WHY
- AccountThe Apple, Google or Kakao account you sign in with, the email address that account shares, and a user number the server issues. Used to tell runners apart in a room and to keep you the same runner on another phone. If you sign in with Google or Kakao, that account's name (Kakao: nickname) and profile picture address are stored with the account too. The app doesn't use them — rooms show only the nickname you chose.
- NicknameOnly if you set one. Shown to the people in the same room. Your device name is never used.
- Room codes, join and leave timesUsed to run rooms: capacity, locking and expiry.
- Times of code attemptsUsed to stop people from guessing other rooms' codes.
- Run time, distance and pace while in a roomShown live to the people in the same room. The server only passes them on and doesn't store them.
- Heart rate while running (only if you turn it on)If you turn on “Show my heart rate to the room” in Settings, your heart rate is shown live to the people in the same room while you run. It's off by default. The server only passes it on and doesn't store it.
- Location while running in a roomRounded to about 10 m and shown as a dot on the map of the people in the same room. Not sent when you're not running. The server only passes it on and doesn't store it.
- People you ran withWho was in a room with you, and when you last ran together. Used to tell them when you open a room. You can turn this off in Settings.
- Notification address (push token)Used to notify this phone when a friend opens a room.
- App usageWhen you open and close the app, which screens you see and which features you use (making or joining a room, starting and stopping music sharing, the mic switch, starting and ending a run, your answer to the Health app question). Used only to find where people get stuck and fix it. It never includes your run's distance, time or pace, your location, heart rate or voice. Linked to your account; the app can write it but never read it back.
- Music and voiceRelayed when you're apart or more than two of you are running. Never recorded or stored. When you're close by, phones connect directly without the server. Your voice is sent only while the mic switch is on.
WHAT STAYS ON THIS PHONE
- Runs, routes and 1 km splitsNever sent to the server.
- What goes to and from the Health appIf you allow it, when a run ends the app saves it to the iOS Health app as a workout — distance, time, pace, pauses, climb and route, and calories when your weight is known. It also reads heart rate, resting heart rate, weight, VO₂ max, running form metrics, steps, date of birth and workouts from the Health app, only to show them beside your runs and to estimate calories. If a watch already recorded the same run, the app doesn't write a second one. What it reads isn't stored in the app or used for advertising or anything else. It isn't sent to the server either — except that if you turn on “Show my heart rate to the room” in Settings, your heart rate while running is passed live to the friends in the same room. It isn't stored anywhere and goes when you leave the room. It's off by default and you can turn it off at any time. Each item can be turned off in the app's Settings or in Health › Sharing › Apps.
- SettingsSuch as your goal, voice guidance, auto-pause and saving to Health.
